As with European travel narratives that addressed Algeria, German travel discourse also includes travel texts such as that of Karl Berndt. His discourse carries epistemic and cultural content with creative and aesthetic literary value. In his account of Emir Abdelkader, Berndt portrays the Emir, in his cultural dimension, as a symbol, a hero, and a human being ahead of his time. The text also presents stereotypical images, representations, and structures concerning Algerian society. These structures and representations therefore deserve to be studied at the level of discourse through modern theories that can clarify the perspective and reveal implicit cultural meanings. These meanings concern both the Algerian Other and the European self, especially the German self, which approached Algeria through an Orientalist perspective and issued subjective judgments based on what it observed within a cohesive society attached to its customs and traditions.
