This paper examines the ongoing evolution and societal imperative of the humanities within the American higher education landscape. Tracing intellectual foundations from nineteenth-century Transcendentalism and John Dewey's educational pragmatism to modern critical traditions, this study evaluates how humanistic inquiry sustains democratic citizenship, fosters critical media literacy, and governs technological innovation. By confronting contemporary pressures of market-driven vocationalism, political polarization, and generative artificial intelligence, this article demonstrates why a revitalized, inclusive liberal arts curriculum remains fundamental to global democracy and human flourishing.
