The Association of Algerian Muslim Ulama was among the national movements most concerned with cultural issues. It called for cultural independence and civilizational progress. The Association confronted the colonial administration and its repressive laws against Islam and the Arabic language. It believed that education served the nation and preserved its heritage. It therefore gave direct attention to Arabic education, despite all colonial administrative obstacles. It defended clubs and cultural associations. It also supported scouting, theatre groups, and sports teams. These activities helped spread its educational message and defend the foundations of national identity. Its firm defense of these core elements helped restore confidence among Algerians. It also demonstrated the Association's important role in resisting colonial attempts to undermine the national culture.
