This study examines the movement for reform and religious renewal led by Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Karim al-Maghili in the Islamic Kingdom of Songhay. It focuses on his fatwas to Askia Muhammad al-Turi. The Algerian historian Abd al-Qadir Zabadia compiled and critically edited these questions and responses under the title Askia’s Questions and al-Maghili’s Answers. They addressed religious, political, cultural, social, and economic life. These interventions helped give the institutions and practices of the state an Islamic character. They also contributed to the emergence of a jihad movement led by Askia Muhammad himself against the peoples and kingdoms practicing indigenous religions in the Niger Bend.
